Postgres or Mongo for a forum with heavy relational queries?

Votes, ledgers, and joins everywhere. Mongo made the nested blocks cheap but I keep writing application-side joins, and pagination counts drift.

Postgres. The moment access control returns a query constraint instead of a boolean, you want the database doing the filtering — row-level ownership as a WHERE clause, correct counts for free. This forum runs exactly that pattern.

Counterpoint: if your content is deeply nested blocks and you rarely query across documents, Mongo stays cheaper to operate. Forums are not that, though.
